How to face a tough time?
I’m the kind of person who doesn’t usually want to get advice from a person who has never actually experienced a real tough time. It’s true that we all go through difficulties and challenges in our own way and cannot possibly quantify the amount of pain, or who has suffered more than the other person. But there are those of us who have had to face such traumatic experiences in our lives that we felt that we didn’t want to stay on this planet any longer. I was one of them. The point, however, is that out of all the trials that one goes through, you’ll find that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. I got through my darkness as I had stumbled and been bruised so many times, but as I came out of the darkness I found myself much stronger and more resilient than I have ever been– lol!
During the “Dark Night of the Soul” as we go through our own difficulties, we learn many valuable lessons. I certainly, too, learned so many do’s and don’ts (lessons) and I’d like to share some of them with you here.
Lesson #1: Don’t be a hermit!
When we are going through painful, traumatic experiences in our life, a tendency is to want to withdraw and dwell on the pain on our own. We feel sorry for ourselves and try to deal with the heaviness of life alone. This is one of the worst things that we can do. It’s helpful to be in solitude to rejuvenate our spiritual being once in a while when we are not in a depressed state, but it’s through connecting with others that we feel a sense of belonging and true joy in our own life. We are social beings whether you are introvert or extrovert. It really doesn’t matter. We all want to be understood and loved. When we are feeling depressed and alone, all the negative thoughts can creep into our mind because we see no solutions or way out in the darkness that we are in. Instead of trying to be a hermit, trying to figure out everything on your own, in your own darkness, let others help open the box and let the light shine upon you. It’s ok to ask for help. We all need help once in a while. Asking for help is not a weakness, instead you are being smart!
Lesson #2: Connect with others
When there is a natural or man-made disaster, we can always witness people from all over the world coming together showing their support for one another creating beautiful miracles of human interconnection where there is no border, no judgment, but simply people coming together wanting to help and support each other. When many minds come together with positive intention, not only can we come up with solutions that can save a life, but also shift the energy of the entire human consciousness that can save many, many lives. No baby can grow without receiving loving connection from a mother or caregiver. It’s very difficult for anyone to overcome depression or difficulty without having a loving connection or support from another human being. Call your friend! If you don’t have friends, find a local group that of your interest – there are many of them, or find a therapist that you can intuitively trust. Please don’t try to do everything on your own.
Lesson #3: Distract your mind
When your mind is busy doing things, you have less time to think about the problems at hand. Some may say you are in denial, but I don’t’ think so. Being in denial is when you pretend that you are not depressed when you are while ignoring the feeling and pain that is within you. Your awareness of what you are feeling and thinking is not in denial. You are strategically finding things to do that can improve the quality of your life. For example, you may study books about self-improvement, listen to inspirational audio books, watch inspirational movies, start writing a book, start learning to play ukulele, or start taking yoga classes. Whatever things that can bring a dose of joy and improvement into your life, pursue them! Don’t just sit there on your own, feeling sorry for yourself.
Lesson #4: Be kind to yourself!
We can be our own worst enemies at times. Be kind to yourself and even you may be feeling like you are a loser, discipline yourself and stop those thoughts and just face the truth! Just look at your past objectively and notice all your accomplishments throughout your life. I know there are so many of them. Pat yourself on your shoulder and acknowledge your successes in life. Tell yourself that you did a great job when you did! Acknowledge the fact that you had had some challenges in the past that were very painful, but you successfully overcame them. Job well done! You are amazing!
Lesson #5: Find 5 things that you can be grateful for every day.
Wherever attention goes the energy flows. When we focus on negativity that’s what we experience and feel. Start noticing the things that are working for you, all those things that you take for granted. Just look around you… the chair that you are sitting on, the home you live in where you can stay warm and safe. I’m sure you can find at least 5 things that you can be grateful for. Train your mind to purposely focus daily on the things that are beautiful and wonderful. A little by little your inner world will shift which will be reflected without.
No matter what challenges you are going through at this time, please know that they don’t last forever and they too shall leave soon, out of your life forever! The only thing that last forever is your spirit… equipped with the eternal capacity to live, love, and laugh out loud!
